From Pinyon-Juniper to Revolution

From Pinyon-Juniper to Revolution

The Pinyon-Juniper Alliance was formed several years ago to protect Pinyon-Pine and Juniper forests from destruction under the BLM’s and Forest Service’s misguided “restoration” plan. Since that time, we have attended public meetings, organized petitions, talked with politicians and locals, coordinated with other groups, written articles and given presentations, and commented on public policy. Things now are worse than ever. The latest project we’ve seen aims to remove PJ forest from more than 130,000 acres of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument….

Proposed 2018 Farm Bill “Categorically Exempts” PJ Forest Removal from Environmental Review

Proposed 2018 Farm Bill “Categorically Exempts” PJ Forest Removal from Environmental Review

The House version of the proposed 2018 Farm Bill contains a provision that would exempt forest destruction of Pinyon-Juniper forests from environmental review under the National Environmental Policy Act. This law is fundamentally insufficient to save the planet, but it does represent one of the few tools that conservationists use to protect rare and endangered species and to reign in wayward politicians and their destructive schemes. Destruction of Traditional Indigenous Pine Nut Picking Groves

Destruction of Traditional Indigenous Pine Nut Picking Groves

In 2015, Members of the Walker River Paiute Nation living in northwestern Nevada were angered after the Forest Service clearcut more than 70 acres of pine nut trees (Tu’ba’pe) that have been used by the tribe for thousands of years, until the modern day. According to the Forest Service, the trees were cut “by mistake” as part of a federal plan to improve habitat for the Sage Grouse. Tribal members disagree, stating that clearcutting these forests will not help the…

The Letter to the Editor the Ely Times wouldn’t publish

For thousands of years, pinion trees have provided a sustainable source of food for our ancestors, the Great Basin Shoshone. In fact, without pine nuts, our ancestors would not have survived our harsh Winters. These trees were so important they are considered “sacred.” But apparently now; they are in the way of unsustainable exploitation in the name of “development.” But the developers aren’t paying for this. We taxpayers are. Our money is being used to kill naturally growing forests in…
